Foreign Minister Steps Up Meetings in New York and Holds Talks with Russian Counterpart

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mohiuddin Salem continued his intensive diplomatic engagements in New York, meeting with several counterparts and heads of delegations and organisations participating in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meetings addressed a range of issues of mutual interest.
During his meeting yesterday (Friday) with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, attended by the Governor of Darfur Region, the two sides discussed bilateral relations between Khartoum and Moscow and ways to strengthen them and revitalise areas of cooperation in a manner that serves the mutual interests of the two countries. They also exchanged views on a number of issues of common concern.
The Foreign Minister briefed his Russian counterpart on the latest political, security, and humanitarian developments in Sudan, as well as the government’s efforts to achieve peace and stability, preserve the country’s sovereignty, and safeguard its unity and territorial integrity.
The minister commended Russia’s supportive position toward Sudan, praising its continued role in supporting Sudan and backing efforts to achieve peace and stability in the country. He reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to continuing consultations and coordination with Russia and strengthening bilateral cooperation across various fields.
For his part, the Russian Foreign Minister praised the distinctive bilateral relations between the two countries and reaffirmed his country’s support for the Sudanese government and its legitimate institutions, as well as Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also expressed his country’s hope that peace would be achieved throughout Sudan, noting the Russian Federation’s support for the government’s efforts to bring together the various national constituencies and subsequently reach a Sudanese-led solution that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people and government.
On a related note, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation met with his counterpart, the Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The meeting covered bilateral relations, cooperation and coordination, and an exchange of views on several regional and international issues of mutual interest.
The minister briefed his counterpart on political, security and humanitarian developments in Sudan, stressing the importance of African solidarity, support for Sudanese state institutions, and the preservation of Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
The two sides also discussed Sudan-related issues before the UN Security Council. The minister reaffirmed Sudan’s position that the Council’s measures should support security and stability and should not undermine the ability of national state institutions to fulfil their responsibilities.
The two sides agreed to continue consultations and coordination during the coming period and to strengthen communication between their respective foreign ministries and permanent missions to the United Nations, in a manner that serves their common interests and enhances cooperation between the two countries in regional and international forums.
Separately, during his meeting with the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the minister briefed him on developments in Sudan, stressing that security and stability had returned to most parts of the country. He also called on the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to support Sudan’s position in regional and international forums.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed the organisation’s support for efforts to achieve peace and stability in Sudan and expressed hope that Sudan would enjoy security and peace in the near future.
