Isnad Delegation Meets Arab League Secretary-General, Proposes Sudan Early Recovery Conference

Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Nabil Fahmy received at the League’s headquarters a senior delegation from the Higher Committee of the Isnad Initiative, headed by former Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Essam Sharaf and comprising several initiative leaders and Arab and Egyptian diplomatic figures.
The delegation, after congratulating the Secretary-General on assuming his new duties and wishing him success, gave a brief overview of the Isnad Initiative’s activities over the past three years, highlighting the key activities and programs it has implemented in support of Sudanese people affected by the war and residing in the Arab Republic of Egypt. It also reviewed the initiative’s efforts and activities inside Sudan as part of its contribution to addressing the humanitarian, social, and economic repercussions of the war.
For his part, the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for the efforts undertaken by the Isnad Initiative and its role in supporting Sudanese people affected by the war, praising the importance of initiatives that contribute to alleviating humanitarian suffering and enhancing prospects for stability and recovery, according to a press statement issued by the initiative’s media office.
The meeting also discussed a proposal put forward by the Isnad Initiative to organize an Early Recovery Conference for Sudan under the auspices of the League of Arab States, in cooperation with the Egyptian Council for Foreign Relations and a number of relevant organizations, institutions, and bodies.
The Secretary-General welcomed the proposal and expressed his approval of it as part of efforts to support the development of a shared vision for early recovery in Sudan and address the repercussions resulting from the war.
The two sides agreed to hold a preparatory meeting at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in the coming period. During the meeting, the Isnad Initiative will present a comprehensive concept paper on the proposed conference, including its objectives, themes, proposed outcomes, and the relevant entities, institutions, and organizations to be invited to participate. The paper will then be discussed and practical steps for organizing the conference agreed upon. It is noteworthy that the proposal had previously been discussed and endorsed by Sudan’s Ambassador to Cairo.
The Higher Committee delegation of the Isnad Initiative included Ambassador Dr. Ali Youssef, Deputy Chairman of the initiative and former Sudanese Foreign Minister; Ambassador Dr. Kamal Hassan Ali, Deputy Chairman of the initiative and former Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States; Ambassador Dr. Salah Halima, Deputy Chairman of the initiative, former Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister, and Deputy Chairman of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Relations; and Dr. Tamer Mohammed Suleiman, Secretary-General of the Isnad Initiative, former Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator and Rapporteur of the Joint Mechanism at the former Arab League Mission in Sudan.
The meeting was also attended on behalf of the League of Arab States by Ambassador Sherif Kamel, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and Head of the Secretary-General’s Office; Ambassador Zaid Al-Sabban, Director of the Sudan and Africa Department; and Counselor Ahmed Nassef from the Secretary-General’s Office.
The meeting comes as part of the Isnad Initiative’s efforts to expand cooperation with Arab, regional, and international institutions, mobilize efforts to support the Sudanese people, and transition from an emergency humanitarian response to the early recovery phase, paving the way for reconstruction and development efforts and the restoration of stability in Sudan.
