US Company Anthropic Exposes UAE-Linked Influence Network Targeting International Narrative on Sudan War

Anthropic, the US company behind the AI system “Claude,” has revealed the disruption of a major influence operation that utilized its platform to target issues related to the Sudan war and UN accountability mechanisms. The company stated it had linked the operation “with high confidence” to UAE government officials, according to a report published on (Saturday) by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
According to a threat intelligence report released by the company on September 10, the operation was managed by a network of approximately 300 inauthentic social media accounts. It also established a front organization that mimicked the identity of a genuine Swiss group to disseminate reports on human rights that appeared independent.
Anthropic revealed that the operation’s organizers used “Claude” to draft testimonies intended for delivery by two individuals before the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council, with instructions that the testimonies contain no mention of the UAE.
In a move directly related to Sudan, the company stated that the operation appropriated the identity of a real Sudanese human rights organization and prepared full testimonies in the names of two individuals. The aim was to submit material favoring one of the conflict’s parties to the UN, presenting it as if it originated from independent local witnesses.
The operation also compiled detailed dossiers on 18 Members of the European Parliament and several prominent journalists, alongside what the company described as “counter-accountability dossiers” targeting UN Special Rapporteurs who had previously criticized the UAE’s conduct in Sudan. Anthropic explained that the network operated by concealing the entity behind its activities and presenting its accounts as independent; internal information, according to the company, revealed that this apparent independence was viewed as a key element of the network’s strategic strength.
The company confirmed that it had disabled the account used in the operation but emphasized that it could not verify whether the prepared testimonials or documents had actually reached the intended targets or influenced political decisions.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) highlighted the Sudan-related aspect of the report, noting that the operation also targeted UN experts who had criticized the UAE’s alleged role in the war in Sudan.
