Minister of Industry and Trade to “Sudanhorizon”: Import Ban on Goods to Be Evaluated Soon

The Sudanese Ministry of Industry and Trade has announced that the decision to ban the importation of certain goods will be evaluated in the coming period.

Minister of Industry and Trade Mohasin Ali Yacoub confirmed that her ministry will undertake an assessment of the import ban and examine its positive and negative outcomes.

In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon, Yacoub said: “The decision to ban the goods will be evaluated soon.”

In April, the Council of Ministers issued a decision banning the importation of 46 goods, saying the measure was aimed at curbing the depletion of foreign-currency resources on luxury goods.

However, the National Chamber of Importers said last week that the decision to ban the importation of a number of goods had not contributed to preserving the value of the Sudanese pound.

The Importers’ Chamber added that the national currency had lost value in less than four months. It explained that the dollar was trading at around 4,000 Sudanese pounds when the import ban was issued, before rising to approximately 6,100 pounds currently, representing a decline of around 52.5% in the value of the Sudanese pound in less than four months.
