“The Road to Asmara”: A Short Story Collection by Omaima Abdullah

Cairo – Sudanhorizon
Sudanese novelist and short story writer Omaima Abdullah has released a new collection of short stories titled “The Road to Asmara,” a new literary endeavor inspired by the ongoing war in Sudan.
In her new collection, Omaima documents, through narrative storytelling, some of the human impact of war. The collection comprises approximately fourteen short stories, in which the writer alternates between the tales of women who survived violence and displacement, and the stories of men detained by or held captives by militias.
The writer told Sudanhorizon that the collection can be described as “a literary attempt to ensure that we do not forget the realities of this devastating war.” She added that “the stories not only tell the story of the war, but also our ability to survive when war surrounds us.”
This new collection of short stories in Arabic is the author’s fourth, following:
“Until Further Notice” and “Moon Harbors” and “A Beloved Floating on Ashes.”
She has also published three novels:
“A Paralyzed Memory,” “Amadera,” and “Moonlight.”
It is to be noted that although Ms. Omaima Abdullah’s original field of study was civil engineering; she turned to literary writing early on. She also worked in media as a producer and presenter of radio and television programmes and in recent years has been active in humanitarian and development work, currently holding a position in “Corporate Social Responsibility” within the Defense Industries Sector.
