Egyptian PM Participates in the Inauguration, Operation of the Julius Nyerere Dam in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam – Sudanhorizon
The Egyptian Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, heading a delegation that included Irrigation Minister Hani Sweilem and other senior officials, traveled to Tanzania on Friday to participate in the inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Dam, one of the largest energy and infrastructure projects in Africa. The dam was constructed by an Egyptian consortium comprised of the Arab Contractors Company and Elsewedy Electric.
Egyptian media outlets described the project as bearing the imprint of hundreds of Egyptian engineers, technicians, and workers who contributed to transforming one of Africa’s largest engineering projects from plans on paper into a fully operational, colossal facility.
Approximately 1,700 Egyptian engineers and technicians participated in the project, which involved a workforce exceeding 12,000 during its various phases. This experience demonstrated the capabilities of Egyptian personnel in managing and executing complex engineering projects within a large and multidisciplinary work environment.
Engineer Wael Hamdy, Vice President of Elsewedy Electric Group, stated that the inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Dam and Power Plant project represents a significant milestone in the group’s history, reflecting its world-class engineering expertise and capabilities that enable it to execute major strategic projects.
Hamdy emphasized that the project’s operational results reflect the high level of efficiency achieved during implementation, saying, “Measurements and actual tests have shown that the energy produced exceeds the project’s design capacity, reflecting higher operational efficiency while using less water to generate the same amount of power.”
The plant has a total capacity of approximately 2,115 megawatts through nine turbines, making it one of the largest power generation facilities in Tanzania. It provides a significant boost to the electricity grid’s capacity, supporting the needs of citizens, the productive and industrial sectors, and driving economic development.
The project’s importance extends beyond electricity generation. Located on the Rufiji River, one of Tanzania’s most important rivers, the dam plays a key role in regulating water flow and utilizing it efficiently, in addition to mitigating flood risks in the river basin.
The dam’s reservoir has a storage capacity of approximately 34 billion cubic meters of water, giving the project strategic importance that extends beyond the electricity sector to include water resource management and support for agricultural activities, irrigation, and economic development.
The project also opens new horizons for the development of the surrounding region by supporting agriculture, economic activities, and tourism, while ensuring the preservation of the environment and wildlife in one of Tanzania’s most ecologically important areas.
The Julius Nyerere Dam represents a unique model for the presence of Egyptian companies in Africa. The project was not simply a contract to build a power plant, but a comprehensive experience in which Egyptian expertise contributed to design, implementation, management, and operation, in collaboration with thousands of Tanzanian workers.
