AfDB Reaffirms Support for Sudan’s Agriculture, Cites $275 Million in Previous Financing

African Development Bank Country Manager for Sudan David Motoko said the bank is committed to financing and supporting agricultural sector projects in Sudan, noting that its total financing for the sector has reached approximately $275 million, reflecting the sector’s importance within the bank’s development interventions in Sudan.

He made the remarks during a meeting between the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and the African Development Bank’s country manager for Sudan, attended by several directors of the ministry’s general departments and units. The meeting was held at the undersecretary’s office during Motoko’s visit to Sudan from August 11 to 13, 2026, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation’s media office.

For her part, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation Dr. Fatima Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Rahma stressed the importance of the visit at a time when Sudan is working to rehabilitate its agricultural sector, restore its role in supporting the national economy, and achieve food security.

Rahma praised the active role played by the African Development Bank in supporting and financing a number of development projects in Sudan. She stressed the importance of continued cooperation between the two sides, particularly amid the growing need to rehabilitate the agricultural sector’s infrastructure and productive capacity.

The meeting discussed areas of joint cooperation and the African Development Bank’s role in financing development projects in Sudan, with a focus on the agricultural sector as one of the key sectors during the recovery and reconstruction phase.

It also reviewed priority areas that could receive financing during the next phase, as well as mechanisms for coordination between the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the African Development Bank, and relevant authorities to help identify priorities and direct resources toward projects with the greatest impact.

Both sides stressed the importance of strengthening institutional coordination and developing priority projects comprehensively to ensure their rapid implementation and maximize the benefits of available financing, particularly in agricultural production, agricultural infrastructure, support for small-scale producers, improving productivity, and enhancing food security.

The visit by the African Development Bank’s country manager comes amid Sudan’s efforts to rehabilitate its agricultural sector, restore its productive capacity, and strengthen its role in supporting the national economy, creating employment opportunities, and improving livelihoods.
