Official Report Warns: Fragmented Data Holding Back Sudan’s Mining Potential

An official report issued by Sudan’s mining sector has revealed difficulties in establishing a unified national database for the entire sector in the country.
The report, seen by Sudanhorizon reporter, confirmed the multiplicity of government entities involved in data storage, including the Ministry of Minerals, the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, the General Authority for Geological Research, and the operating companies.
The report pointed to the weak technical and financial capabilities of the majority of at least 450 Sudanese companies operating in the production sector, noting that they operate in an unstable investment climate and a complex operational environment.
According to the report, the General Authority for Geological Research, as the technical body responsible for the pre-concession phase, faces challenges including insufficient funding, a shortage of specialized technical personnel, weak technical infrastructure, and the duplication of systems and the impact of gaps. The report warned of organizational and implementation gaps in the current production stages, from mining to processing, transportation, and export.
The report emphasized gaps represent leakage of national wealth, loss of control over resources, or weakening of the state’s ability to maintain its reserves.
It emphasized that the issue of production and development has become a major strategic issue requiring comprehensive and definitive solutions, reformulated according to clear economic, technical, and presidential principles during the period (2026-2029) to build a sustainable mining sector capable of supporting the national economy.
Last year, Sudan’s gold production reached 70 tons, according to government statistics.
Sudan relies on gold as its most important source of foreign currency in light of the economic and political challenges the country has faced since the outbreak of war in April 2023.
