Sudanhorizon News Website Obtains Proposed Date for an AU Peace and Security Council Delegation Visit to Sudan

The Sudanhorizon News Website has obtained the date set for a high-level delegation from the African Union Peace and Security Council to visit Sudan in the coming period.

According to the information, the proposed date for the visit is set for mid-August, and the delegation will be headed by the Algerian ambassador, whose country chair the Peace and Security Council for the month of August.

Algeria’s ambassador and representative to the African Union, Mohamed Khaled, who also holds the presidency of the Council for August, revealed in a tweet on the X platform the Council’s activities and initiatives under his country’s presidency, stating that the visit to Sudan would be among the most prominent of these activities.

According to diplomatic sources who spoke to Sudanhorizon, the visit is significant in terms of its timing and the issues that the African Union Peace and Security Council delegation will discuss with senior Sudanese officials and other parties they are set to meet.

The visit comes amidst intensive diplomatic efforts to end the suspension of Sudan’s membership in the African Union, given the positive engagement between Sudan and the AU institutions, as well as the relative stability of the Sudanese government following the return of state institutions to Khartoum, and the victories achieved by the Sudanese Armed Forces on the ground, contrasted with the militias’ territorial losses and the internal divisions and defections they have suffered.

It is worth noting that the African Union’s envoy to Sudan, Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche, visited Khartoum on July 8th and met with the Chairman of the Sovereign Council to discuss the latest political and military developments and finalize arrangements for reopening an AU Liaison Office in Khartoum, emphasizing the priority of a political solution and national dialogue.

Belaich also met with Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris to discuss coordinating peace efforts and unifying initiatives aimed at ending the war. He announced at that time an upcoming visit by the AU leadership to Sudan to support peace efforts.

The African Union Peace and Security Council last visited Sudan in early October 2024, a four-day visit that included a field visit to Port Sudan, during which it met with the Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and held meetings with officials in the Cabinet, the Attorney General, and a number of Sudanese leaders.
