Deputy Chief Justice: Destruction of Judicial Institutions Will Not Deter Us from Our Role

Deputy Chief Justice Dr. Munir Mohammed Al-Hassan stated that the fundamental principles advocated by the international community regarding human rights do not conflict with the teachings of Islam or the ethics and principles of Sudanese society in particular, with only a few exceptions.

He made the remarks today (Thursday) while addressing the second consultative workshop on preparing Sudan’s national report for the fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism, focusing on recommendations from the third cycle concerning the rule of law and the administration of justice. The workshop was organized by the Judicial Authority in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice, represented by the National Human Rights Mechanism.

The Deputy Chief Justice said Sudan must build on these foundations in administering justice and upholding the rule of law, noting that religious, ethical, and legal obligations require the provision of judicial services and the protection of citizens’ rights.

He pointed out that the recommendations of the Human Rights Council covered several areas and totaled 283 recommendations, of which Sudan accepted 244. He explained that the rejected recommendations were declined because they conflicted with religious principles and constituted interference in national sovereignty.

He said the preparation of the fourth periodic report comes at a difficult time for Sudan, marked by the outbreak of war and the extremely complex circumstances it has created. He stressed that the looting and destruction suffered by judicial institutions would not deter them from carrying out their role in administering justice and consolidating human rights principles, according to a press statement issued by the Ministry of Justice’s media office.

The Deputy Chief Justice affirmed that the event represents an important opportunity to present a comprehensive and integrated national vision that truthfully and objectively reflects what has been achieved at the national level, particularly within the justice sector.
