Finance Minister Dr. Jibril Ibrahim revealed the government’s plan for the coming period to organize rural citizens and enhance their capabilities through small-scale projects that increase production efficiency in rural areas and reduce poverty. This will be done in coordination with development partners to implement economic projects aimed at improving citizens’ living standards.
During the handover ceremony in Khartoum Wednesday between Rasha Omar, the outgoing Country Director of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Sudan, and her successor, the Minister praised IFAD’s efforts in combating rural poverty, based on the Fund’s strategic partnership with Sudan, which has been ongoing since 1977.
He indicated that Sudan looks forward to increased direct funding and the Fund’s contribution as a strategic partner in mobilizing and attracting funding from international institutions and donors to support agricultural recovery and the reconstruction of rural Sudan.
He also emphasized the importance of leveraging IFAD’s international expertise and standing to support the agricultural sector in achieving food security, creating employment opportunities, improving the income levels of youth, women, vulnerable groups, and internally displaced persons, and reintegrating them into productive activities.
For her part, Rasha Omar commended Sudan’s commitment as the first country to pay its contribution to the 14th replenishment of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
She explained that the Fund focuses on addressing the root causes of challenges facing rural communities by building climate resilience, managing natural resources, empowering women and youth, developing agricultural value chains for markets, increasing the added value of agricultural products, and enhancing national food security. It also provides technical support and limited financial assistance to producers’ organizations and the private sector.
She noted the Fund’s coordination with international and regional financing institutions to implement its objectives, and highlighted opportunities for collaboration with the (Silatak) Foundation in Qatar, which focuses on an initiative to settle young people in villages and provide them with decent employment opportunities.
