Moscow – Sudanhorizon – Mariam Abasher
Sudan’s Ambassador to Russia, Mohamed Al-Ghazali Siraj, has described the meetings of the Political Consultation Committee between Sudan and Russia, held in Moscow on Tuesday , as extremely important.
In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon news website on Wednesday, Ambassador Ghazali said that this year’s round of consultations is particularly significant because both countries (Sudan and Russia) face considerable challenges and difficulties due to their respective circumstances.
This compels the two countries to achieve greater rapprochement, strengthen relations, and develop a shared understanding on numerous regional and international issues. Furthermore, the Political Consultation Committee provides an opportunity for coordination between the two countries across various areas of bilateral cooperation.
Ghazali considered the regular convening of the committee meetings for the eleventh consecutive session as clear evidence of the strong desire of both sides to develop bilateral relations. He pointed out that the Consultative Committee primarily addresses various aspects of bilateral relations, and this was evident in Tuesday’s session, which covered political, economic, cultural, and media issues, as well as all areas of cooperation between Sudan and Russia.
An understanding was reached on these matters and on the steps expected to advance specific files within the framework of activating and strengthening relations between the two countries.
The Sudanese Ambassador to Russia added that the meetings of the Political Consultative Committee would give a significant boost to bilateral cooperation files and facilitate a shared understanding of any obstacles or challenges that might hinder the relevant files, as well as how the two countries could agree on solutions.
He noted that Russia, as it has consistently done throughout the political consultations and bilateral meetings held on the sidelines, strongly and decisively affirmed its unwavering support for Sudan, its sovereignty and territorial integrity, its opposition to any attempts to undermine them, and its commitment to non-interference in Sudan’s internal affairs.
The Ambassador explained that the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister announced a 30% increase in the number of scholarships offered to Sudan, with a willingness to further increase the number based on Sudan’s needs. The Ambassador noted that the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Muawiya Osman Khalid, who headed the Sudanese delegation, received a very positive response from the Russian side regarding the government’s position on political matters, the military progress of the armed forces on the ground, the initiatives proposed on the political scene (the Quartet and Quintet), the fate of these initiatives, and the government’s perspective on them. He also discussed the government’s peace initiative and its efforts regarding the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided a comprehensive explanation to the Russian side, and the issue of coordination in international forums was one of the most important items on the agenda discussed during the official talks.
The Sudanese ambassador to Moscow stated that the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs held several meetings on the sidelines of the Political Consultative Committee meeting. He met on Tuesday with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister responsible for international organizations, and a very transparent and constructive dialogue took place regarding the situation in Sudan, the Sudanese vision for resolving the crisis, and the Russian position. Ghazali said the meeting was purposeful and constructive, and helped to establish a shared understanding of many issues.
