Al-Burhan Discusses Peace and Stability with African Peace and Security Council Delegation

Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan met Sunday with a delegation from the African Union Peace and Security Council, in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Muhyiddin Salem.

In a press statement, Ambassador Mohamed Khaled, Algeria’s representative to the African Union, the council’s rotating chair for August, and head of the delegation, described the meeting as “fruitful,” saying it addressed a number of issues related to peace, security, and stability in Sudan. He praised the attention and commitment demonstrated by the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council toward issues of peace and stability.

The delegation head reaffirmed the African Peace and Security Council’s firm and unequivocal position on respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity, as well as supporting the aspirations of the Sudanese people to restore peace, security, and stability, rebuild development, and establish democratic governance.

Ambassador Mohamed Khaled said the meeting discussed the current situation in the country. The council expressed deep concern over the continuation of the war and its resulting heavy loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and worsening humanitarian crisis.

The delegation head stressed that the only path to lasting peace lies through dialogue and national reconciliation and reaching a comprehensive political settlement that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people. He said the council welcomed steps related to the peace initiative and the government’s return to carrying out its duties from Khartoum, describing this as a pivotal step toward restoring the functioning of state institutions, providing essential services, rebuilding trust, and advancing the democratic transition.

He called on the government and political forces to make the transitional process more inclusive and work toward national consensus leading to a constitutional system through free and fair elections.

He also stressed the African Union’s central role in Sudan’s peace process, praising the efforts of the Quintet mechanism under African Union leadership, which brings together several institutions and organizations.

The delegation head reiterated the council’s firm condemnation of any external interference in Sudan’s internal affairs, saying such interference fuels the conflict. He also rejected any attempts to establish parallel entities or governments that could undermine Sudan’s unity and sovereignty.

He welcomed steps toward reopening the African Union’s liaison office in Khartoum and expressed hope for a strengthened role for the Union and support for Sudan’s return to active participation in the African Union.
