IGAD Reallocates $1 Million to Each Member State to Combat Ebola

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has pledged to allocate $1 million to each of its member states, in collaboration with the Pandemic Response Fund, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), to combat the Ebola outbreak.
At a virtual ministerial meeting held on Friday , with the participation of Sudan’s Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu urged governments and citizens of member states to exercise caution, follow health guidelines, and report suspected cases immediately.
The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to preparedness and a collective response to combat the disease, which has been spreading in several African countries. The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently experiencing an outbreak in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces.
The Ebola virus is a serious pathogen belonging to the filovirus family. It causes Ebola hemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal. The virus is transmitted from wild animals to humans, and then spreads between humans through contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals.
