Justice Minister Rejects Equating SAF with RSF Militias
Geneva -Sudanorizon
Sudanese Justice Minister, Abdullah Mohammed Darf, has n’s categorically rejected attempts seeking to equate the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which is fulfilling its constitutional duty to maintain security, uphold the rule of law, and defend the country’s unity and territorial integrity, with a terrorist rebel militia that has committed systematic and widespread violations against civilians.
The minister also stressed that demanding an expansion of the arms embargo amounts to adopting the demands of the rebels and their supporters.
The minister addressed the interactive dialogue session on the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, held, Thursday, as part of the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
He welcomed the High Commissioner’s visit to Sudan following the horrific massacres perpetrated by the militia in El Fasher, and emphasized the importance of the report’s documentation of the grave crimes and violations committed against civilians.
The Minister of Justice affirmed the Sudanese government’s commitment to achieving justice and protecting human rights, highlighting the progress made by the National Commission of Inquiry into Crimes and Violations of National Law and International Humanitarian Law.
The Commission has compiled detailed statistics on criminal cases and victims in the conflict-affected states. The Minister presented figures and statistics on the number of deaths and injuries, as well as the criminal cases filed against the rebel militia and those that have been adjudicated. He also reviewed the number of criminal cases filed against members of the regular forces, thus confirming the integrity and impartiality of the National Commission and the national judicial system.
The Minister of Justice detailed the efforts of the government and local communities in responding to the situation of those forcibly displaced from El Fasher to the Northern State, particularly in the Al-Afad camp.
He noted that the National Commission has begun its work from within the camp to investigate violations, especially the systematic crimes committed against women and girls.
The head of the Sudanese delegation reiterated Sudan’s openness to constructive cooperation with the Human Rights Council and international mechanisms in Sudan, namely the Country Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Expert on the situation of human rights.
In response to the High Commissioner’s briefing on expanding the arms embargo, the Minister asserted that this merely reflects the demands of the rebel militia and its backers. He questioned what the United Nations has done regarding the state that has violated and continues to violate the Security Council embargo, persisting in supplying weapons to Darfur in support of the rebel militia—a clear reference to the UAE.
In response to the UAE representative’s claim that his country is the second largest contributor to humanitarian operations in Sudan, the Minister stated that what is required of the Abu Dhabi authorities is clear and specific: they must acknowledge their involvement, immediately cease supplying these militias with weapons, equipment, and mercenaries, and assume full responsibility for their actions
