Chambers of Commerce Federation: We Understand Recent Standards Measures
Khartoum – Hala Hamza
The head of the Sudanese Chambers of Commerce Federation, Ali Salah, has affirmed the vital role of the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization in regulating the movement of goods and ensuring their conformity to Sudanese standards.
He indicated the Federation’s understanding of the procedures recently implemented by the organization, which aim to protect consumers and improve the quality of goods available in the markets.
The Federation head stated that these procedures, despite their recent implementation, serve the interests of the national economy in the medium and long term. He added that the Federation views them as a reformative step to improve performance, not as an impediment to imports or a disruption to the flow of goods.
Ali Salah commended the Director of Standards, Rahba Saeed, for her understanding of the importance of a gradual approach to implementing the procedures, taking into account market conditions and the nature of certain goods, and ensuring that the flow of essential commodities to the markets is not negatively impacted.
Salah praised the permanent exemption of wheat and flour, and the temporary exemption of sugar and cement, describing it as a clear reflection of the Authority’s flexibility and sound economic judgment. He also affirmed the continued understanding with the Authority regarding the application of the procedures to other commodities in a spirit of partnership and flexibility.
The head of the chambers explained that the primary objective of these measures is to improve the overall performance and quality control, not to hinder imports or impose unjustified burdens on importers.
He revealed arrangements in this regard to conduct constructive consultations in the coming period between importers and the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization, with the aim of reaching the best practical ways to implement the new procedures in a balanced manner that meets quality requirements while simultaneously maintaining market stability and the availability of goods.
