The Committee for the Success of the Winter Agricultural Season (2026/2027) held its inaugural meeting on Monday, chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ismat Qurashi, at the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) hall in Khartoum.
The meeting was attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance; the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Federal Governance and Rural Development; the Director General of Agriculture for Khartoum State; production directors from White Nile and Kassala states (participating online); as well as the directors of the Rahad, Halfa Al-Jadida, and Suki schemes, and representatives from the Gezira Scheme and financing institutions.
The meeting reviewed the indicative plan for the agricultural season, which targets the cultivation of approximately three million feddans—including one million feddans for wheat, alongside other winter crops. It also discussed urgent requirements for preparatory operations, primarily the provision of production inputs (seeds, fertilizers, and fuel), securing financing, and ensuring the timely flow of inputs to the states.
Production directors from Khartoum, White Nile, Northern, and River Nile states, along with directors of irrigated schemes, presented their indicative plans, detailing the targeted areas and resource requirements.
The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation emphasized that the Cabinet’s Economic Sector had discussed the season’s preparations in depth, noting that the state is working to meet requirements and create the conditions necessary for the season’s success. He expressed optimism regarding high productivity despite existing challenges and climatic conditions, calling for a strengthened role for the Agricultural Bank and the facilitation of timely financing for farmers. For his part, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance emphasized the State’s reliance on the agricultural sector to support the economy and food security, noting that his ministry is working to facilitate financing and provide necessary resources, given that agriculture is a top priority.
It is noteworthy that the committee for the successful execution of the winter season was established pursuant to Cabinet Decision No. 275. Its mandate includes making preparations for the season, identifying requirements, and facilitating the flow of financing through the Agricultural Bank and commercial banks, all with the aim of boosting productivity and enhancing food security.
