UNSC Holds High-level Briefing Session on Sudan, Tuesday

The UN Security Council will hold a high-level briefing session on Sudan on Tuesday, to be chaired by the UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Africa, Lord Collins of Highbury, whose country chairs the Council this month.
The session will be addressed by Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peace-building Affairs, Ramesh Rajasingham, Head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva, and representatives of Sudanese civil society.
The Permanent Mission of Sudan in New York will present a statement during the session clarifying the extent of the violations and crimes committed by the Rapid Support Militia in a number of states, particularly Darfur, in addition to the serious violations committed by the militia in Al-Gazira State, central Sudan.
A diplomatic source told “Sudanhorizon”, last week, that the briefing session has nothing to do with the draft resolution being discussed in the corridors of the Council.
It is worth noting that a team of experts from the UN Security Council for the International Sanctions Committee imposed on Sudan under Resolution 1519 visited the country and met with state officials.
The Minister of Interior, Major General, Police, Sayerin, commended the field visits of the team of experts, and said in a statement it comes within the context of the committee’s field monitoring of the extent of commitment to the provisions included in Resolution 1591, where issues related to the protection of civilians and the efforts made by the Sudanese government to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid, were discussed.
