UNHC Chief Arrives in Ad-Dabba, Inspects IDPs Situation in Al-Afad Camp

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, arrived in Ad-Dabba, Northern State, Saturday , accompanied by a high-level delegation from the UNHCR.

The Northern State representative , the Secretary of Social Affairs, Manal Makawi, welcomed the humanitarian interventions provided by international and national organizations in the areas of aid and assistance, especially for those displaced from Darfur and Kordofan states to the Al-Afad camp in Ad-Dabba locality.

During her visit to the camp accompanied by the UNHCR delegation, including the High Commissioner, and a delegation from OCHA and other participating organizations,the Secretary emphasized the significant roles played by Ad-Dabba locality, its security committee, and its emergency and crisis committees, as well as the efforts of all social and humanitarian partners in addressing the needs of the displaced persons.

Manal Makawi noted that the Northern State has hosted approximately 4 million displaced people in 185 shelters since the start of the war on April 15, 2023, in addition to other displaced persons, those stranded, and those in transit, as well as community-based hospitality in all seven localities of the state.

The Executive Director of Al-Dabba Locality, Mohamed Saber Kashkash, reviewed his locality’s efforts in hosting and sheltering displaced people, supporting the efforts of the government, the community, organizations, and the Emergency and Crisis Committee to integrate those arriving from the Darfur and Kordofan states.

He emphasized that all official and popular bodies and organizations are working in full coordination to host the displaced, explaining that there are three routes for receiving them. The first is the Azhari Al-Mubarak camp in Al-Afad, which houses 2,008 displaced people. The second route is outside the camp in Al-Dabba city and surrounding areas, accommodating approximately 7,000 people. The third route involves hosted by the community, totaling around 32,000 displaced families, who receive all services in various sectors through the state and local Emergency and Services Committee.

The Assistant Director General of the Refugee Commission for Khartoum, Northern, and River Nile States, Al-Sadiq Suleiman Yaqoub, noted their participation, along with the UN delegation, in a visit to the Al-Afad camp to assess the conditions of those arriving from the Darfur and Kordofan states. He added that the visit was successful, as the UN delegation was able to appreciate the camp’s needs and the possibility of providing the required assistance to the displaced people.
