UN Urged to Investigate IDPs Camp Fire in Darfur
London – Sudanhorizon
The Darfur Diaspora Associations Group in the UK has expressed its deep regret over the massive fire that broke out in the Tawila al-Umda camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in North Darfur State. The fire resulted in deaths among the IDPs and destroyed hundreds of shelters housing families recently displaced from El Fasher, fleeing genocide and ethnic cleansing.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the grouping called on the United Nations to launch an urgent, transparent, and independent investigation into the circumstances of the fire. It emphasized that those responsible for the genocide and ethnic cleansing in El Fasher cannot be trusted, as targeting IDPs, whether directly or through deliberate neglect, represents a new tactic to erase African tribes from Darfur and obliterate their existence.
The Grouping stressed that the perpetrators of genocide and ethnic cleansing in El Fasher cannot be trusted in their conduct or intentions.
The Darfuri grouping also called for immediate and effective measures to protect displaced persons and prevent the recurrence of such disasters. These measures include improving safety conditions within the camps, providing safe shelter, fire prevention equipment, and basic services.
The Gathering emphasized that this tragic incident once again highlights the precarious humanitarian situation in displacement camps, where hundreds of thousands of civilians live in harsh and inhumane conditions, lacking even the most basic necessities for a safe life.
The Gathering appealed to the United Nations and international and regional humanitarian organizations to take urgent action to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to those affected, including shelter, food, healthcare, and psychological support, with particular priority given to children, women, and the elderly.
