The U.S. Department of State’s spokesperson office has announced that the U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, will travel to Doha, Nairobi, London, and Nouakchott in a tour that began today (Friday) “continuing diplomatic efforts to increase humanitarian assistance to the people of Sudan, deter atrocities and arms flows, and coordinate efforts to end the conflict in Sudan.”
A press release stated that, based on the recent progress made, which has led to expanding the scope of humanitarian aid access to and within Sudan, the U.S. envoy would meet with key government officials, representatives from the African Union, the Arab League, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations, NGOs, Sudanese groups, and civil society to emphasize the urgent need for warring parties to allow additional United Nations humanitarian centres to facilitate aid distribution across Sudan.
The statement added that the envoy will also address ways to enable humanitarian corridors that ensure the safe and unhindered movement of civilians and humanitarian aid, as well as improving civilian protection, including for women and girls who are subjected to gender-based violence.
