The U.S. envoy urges the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to halt their attack on El Fasher

The U.S. envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, has urged the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to halt their attacks on El Fasher, the capital of the Darfur region in western Sudan, and commit to protecting civilians.
In a tweet on his X account, seen by the ” Sudanhorizon ” website, the U.S. envoy stated: “We are deeply concerned about the renewed attacks by the RSF. The repeated assaults on El Fasher and the shelling of the nearby displaced persons camps of Abu Shouk and Al-Salam have already brought immense suffering to Sudanese civilians, many of whom fled to El Fasher to escape the fighting in Darfur.”
He continued: “We urge the RSF to cease their assault and take all necessary steps to protect innocent lives and honour their commitments to civilian protection.”
Since May, the RSF has launched 133 failed attempts to seize El Fasher, resulting in several key field commanders losing, including their leader Ali Yaqoub in June and Abdul Rahman Shatta in the past two days.
In June, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution demanding that the RSF stop its attacks on El Fasher, with 14 members voting in favour and one abstaining. However, the RSF has disregarded the resolution, while the U.S. and the international community have so far failed to condemn these repeated violations, merely issuing appeals and demands.
