Sudan’s Representative in Geneva Exposes the Horrific Atrocities of Militias in Al-Gezira State

Geneva – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Hassan Hamid Hassan, revealed today (Tuesday) at the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent the shocking atrocities and violations of international humanitarian law, international human rights law, and the relevant protocols of the four Geneva Conventions, committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.
During his address, he highlighted that while discussions in Geneva focus on the respect for international humanitarian law, particularly the safety and security of individuals, the RSF militia in Sudan is committing heinous atrocities and blatant violations in its brutal war against the state, its people, and institutions since April of last year. He outlined the recent assaults on peaceful villages in Al-Gezira State, where the militia launched retaliatory attacks against civilians using heavy weaponry, artillery, and anti-armour missiles.
Ambassador Hassan stressed that the militia has disregarded international humanitarian law flagrantly and systematically, driven by a lack of accountability and emboldened by the international community’s silence regarding their crimes over the past period.
The ambassador posed a question to the international community: The militia has already met all the criteria to be classified as a terrorist group and has even surpassed these standards; so, how much longer will the international community remain silent about condemning and classifying it?
He further emphasized that the Sudanese Armed Forces have consistently adhered to the standards for civilian protection and rules of engagement in confronting the militia, including caution, proportionality, and precaution. He noted that the Armed Forces had signed four memorandums of understanding with the International Committee of the Red Cross and that the Sudanese military is among the leading institutions on the continent, teaching international humanitarian law in military academies, war colleges, and training centres.
In concluding his statement at the conference, Ambassador Hassan underscored the importance of strict adherence to the principles of neutrality in delivering humanitarian assistance and avoiding any misuse of aid. In this context, he highlighted that the Adré crossing, which the government approved for humanitarian purposes, had recently been used to channel weapons and mercenaries to the militia, providing a clear example of severe breaches of international humanitarian law and the principles governing the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Notably, the conference was a significant global event attended by delegations from 194 countries, including ministers and delegation heads.
