Sudan’s Representative Confers with U.N High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva
Geneva, Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, has discussed the situation of Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries and the conditions of internally displaced persons (IDPs) with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Barham Salih, at the start of the latter’s term.
The Permanent Representative conveyed the Sudanese government’s congratulations to Salih on assuming his post.
Ambassador Hamid has pointed out that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia’s approach since the beginning of the war has been based on targeting and terrorizing civilians to forcibly displace them, as well as targeting strategic and service facilities to achieve this goal. He also reviewed the challenges facing refugees and IDPs in light of the funding crises plaguing humanitarian organizations.
In a related development, the delegate discussed the Sudanese government’s peace initiative with the High Commissioner for Refugees, noting its acceptance and welcome by the United Nations, the African Union, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, and the League of Arab States. He urged all humanitarian organizations to support and endorse the initiative, considering it a comprehensive framework for ending the war and achieving peace, given the challenges these organizations face.
For his part, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees expressed his gratitude to the Permanent Representative and asked him to convey his greetings and appreciation to the Chairman of the Sovereign Council and the Prime Minister.
He confirmed his intention to visit Sudan and meet with officials soon.
The UNHCR official has meanwhile emphasized his personal concern for the situation of Sudanese refugees as a top priority, expressing his deep concern regarding the widespread displacement, grave violations, and profound human suffering affecting children, women, and communities.
He referred to his recent visits to Chad and Kenya and his meetings with Sudanese refugees, during which he was deeply moved by their plight. He affirmed UNHCR’s commitment to continuing its work with the Government of Sudan, neighboring countries, and the international community until conditions are in place for a safe and dignified return.
He stressed that ending the war and achieving a comprehensive peace remains the only true solution to the humanitarian crisis, and that the Sudan file will remain a top priority for the UNHCR despite the challenges of funding shortages and the complex situation on the ground.
