Sudan’s AU Envoy: “Several Parties Benefit from the Suspension of Sudan’s Membership”
Addis Ababa – Sudanhorizon
Sudan has urged the African Union (AU) to take firm action against mercenarism and negative foreign interventions that threaten peace and security across the continent.
Speaking during a meeting at the AU headquarters on Thursday with Mohamed El-Amin Souifi, Chief of Staff to the Chairperson of the AU Commission, and Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche, the AU Envoy to Sudan, Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the AU, Ambassador Al-Zein Ibrahim Hussein, said that certain actors are benefiting from the continued suspension of Sudan’s participation in the AU’s activities.
He argued that the suspension has no basis in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, noting that no democratically elected government existed in Sudan on October 25, 2021, the date cited in the suspension decision. He therefore called for Sudan’s reinstatement within the AU following the formation of a civilian technocratic government led by Kamil Idris, which he described as the central condition outlined in the suspension decision.
Ambassador Al-Zein also urged the AU to support Sudan’s transition through a Sudanese-led vision, backed by the AU in line with an agreed transitional roadmap.
He provided a detailed briefing to Souifi on the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher and Bara, describing them as acts of terrorism that violated both international humanitarian law and domestic law, and reiterated Sudan’s call for the RSF to be designated a terrorist organization.
The envoy stressed that the occupation of El Fasher would not have occurred without the involvement of foreign mercenaries, the use of banned weapons and strategic drones, as well as satellite communication disruptions.
He also expressed Sudan’s gratitude to the AU Commission for dispatching a solidarity and humanitarian assessment mission to Sudan, led by the Nigerian ambassador and the AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development.
For his part, Souifi reaffirmed the African Union’s support for Sudan and its commitment to achieving peace through African-led, Sudanese-owned solutions, offering condolences to the victims of the RSF’s violations.
