Sudanese Defense Minister Leaves for Juba Sunday

The Sudanese Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Hassan Daoud Kabaron, accompanied by a high-level delegation, left Khartoum on Sunday for Juba, the capital of South Sudan, on an official visit described as reflecting the “Sudanese leadership’s keenness to strengthen relations between the two countries at all levels in a way that serves their security and the stability of their peoples.”
The minister and his delegation are scheduled to meet with their South Sudanese counterparts to discuss security and political issues of mutual interest within the framework of the joint political and security mechanism between the two countries, according to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).
The agency added that the visit underscores Sudan’s commitment to strengthening its relations with its neighbor, South Sudan, and reflects the level of cooperation and coordination between the two countries within the framework of the Joint Political and Security Committee, which was established in 2012 following South Sudan’s secession.
The defense minister’s visit comes in the wake of strained relations between the two countries, in light of Sudan’s accusation that its southern neighbor is facilitating the passage of weapons and mercenaries to the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia. It also follows two visits by the South Sudanese president’s security advisor, Tut Galwak, to both Port Sudan and Khartoum recently.
