Sudan Re-elected to the Executive Council of the International Civil Defence Organization in Geneva
Geneva – Sudanhorizon
The General Assembly of the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO), during its 27th session held in Geneva on October 29, re-elected Sudan by consensus to membership of the organization’s Executive Council for a new term extending until 2030, according to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).
The organization works to strengthen the capabilities of civil defence agencies in disaster prevention and emergency response. This role is particularly important for Sudan as it supports the country’s efforts to rehabilitate civil defence facilities and replace equipment destroyed during the war waged by the militia against the state and its institutions.
Sudan’s delegation to the session was headed by Ambassador Hassan Hamed Hassan, Sudan’s Permanent Representative in Geneva. During the General Assembly proceedings, he called for Sudan to be given priority in the organization’s upcoming strategy and programs, as well as for capacity-building support for the National Council for Civil Defence. He also called for assistance in national efforts to provide firefighting and rescue equipment and strengthen early warning systems and emergency operations rooms across the states.
Sudan’s representative commended the new leadership’s efforts towards institutional reform, training development, and technical assistance. He affirmed Sudan’s support for these efforts and expressed hope that they would translate into practical responses to the needs of member states.
Through its membership in the Executive Council, Sudan will continue working with the organization and member states to expand technical cooperation, training, and the exchange of expertise, in support of the National Council for Civil Defence’s efforts to protect citizens, restore services, and create conditions for safe returns and recovery.
