Sudan Maintains Customs Duties on Egyptian Goods
Sudanhorizon – Nazek Shammam
Informed sources revealed on Tuesday that the Sudanese government is maintaining the imposition of customs duties on Egyptian goods entering the country through various border crossings.
The sources told Sudanhorizon that the government has informed its Egyptian counterpart of its adherence to the imposed fees in light of the country’s current conditions, which are marked by a shortage of revenues and heavy reliance on customs duties and taxes.
They noted that Sudan’s Minister of Industry and Trade conveyed the decision to the Egyptian executive authorities during meetings of the Sudanese–Egyptian Higher Ministerial Committee.
The sources explained that Sudan is not bound by the COMESA agreement and has consistently sought to impose parallel fees on goods entering from signatory countries.
Media outlets circulated reports that the application of the COMESA agreement—which exempts goods arriving from Egypt from customs duties—had been suspended following a decision by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, with the payment of other additional charges stemming from taxes, border fees, standards, health, agriculture, local authorities, and other levies.
