Sudan Embassy Debriefs German’s MSF on Awareness Raising about Situation in Sudan

Berlin –Sudanhorizon– SUNA

The Sudanese Ambassador to Germany, Ilham Ibrahim Mohamed Ahmed, on Friday received the head of the German branch of Doctors Without Borders, Christian Katz, and his accompanying delegation.

The meeting discussed the charity’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in El Fasher among official German institutions and the German Parliament (Bundestag).

The Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported that the embassy’s initiative is part of the mission’s ongoing activities and a series of meetings with German humanitarian organizations. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Head of Mission, Ambassador Idris Mohamed Ali, and First Secretary Sami Al-Haj Mohamed, the mission’s Consul.

During the meeting, Ambassador Ilham reviewed the evolving humanitarian situation in and around El Fasher, highlighting the ongoing widespread and systematic violations perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against unarmed civilians. These violations, documented by international research organizations and even broadcast by the militia itself on social media, included ethnically motivated killings, gang rapes, and massacres amounting to genocide.

She pointed out that all of this occurred against a backdrop of the international community’s failure to implement resolutions and appeals aimed at lifting the siege imposed on the city and alleviating the suffering of civilians. As a result, residents of El Fasher and neighboring villages were forced to flee on foot to distant areas, such as the city of Ad-Dabba in the Northern State, in search of safety and protection.

She added that local residents and the government in northern Sudan have taken it upon themselves to provide all necessary food and shelter.

The ambassador noted that the siege imposed on the city of El Fasher, which has lasted for over a year and a half, remains in place. The city is still closed to humanitarian convoys, as confirmed by UN agencies and other international organizations. Challenges persist in delivering humanitarian aid due to militias preventing it from reaching the population and seizing it for the purpose of deliberately starving civilians.

For his part, Christian Katzer affirmed that Doctors Without Borders Germany shares the same concerns regarding the humanitarian situation and continues its efforts to reach the besieged citizens in El Fasher. He highlighted the organization’s active programs in several states and commended community initiatives that have significantly contributed to meeting humanitarian needs in many war-affected areas. He promised the embassy team to work on providing medical services to displaced persons in Ad-Dabbah.

The meeting concluded with a joint affirmation of the importance of cooperation between the embassy and the organization to facilitate humanitarian access and improve funding and support mechanisms for local organizations. Both sides emphasized the necessity of continued coordination to enhance the delivery of aid to the most affected populations in Sudan.

It is worth noting that Doctors Without Borders was founded in 1971 and comprises 26 branches, all of which provide significant emergency medical support in more than 70 countries. The German branch of the organization was founded in 1993 and is one of its largest and most active branches.
