Sudan: Commitment to Chemical Weapons Convention, Rejection of US Allegations

The Hague – Sudanhorizon

Sudan has reaffirmed its commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention and its dedication to continued cooperation with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), its Technical Secretariat, and member states, in the way that strengthen the implementation of the Convention’s provisions and support its objectives of preventing the proliferation of chemical weapons and eliminating them.

These statements come in response to US accusations that the Sudanese army used chemical weapons during its fight against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

A Sudanese delegation, led by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Muawiya Osman Khalid, participated in the 113th session of the Executive Council held at the OPCW headquarters in The Hague, where the Undersecretary delivered Sudan’s statement.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the meetings saw the raising of US allegations regarding the use of chemical weapons in Sudan. The Sudanese delegation reiterated its principled position rejecting any use of such weapons.

During the session, member states discussed various agenda items, including developments concerning Syria and Ukraine, as well as technical matters related to the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

On the sidelines of the meetings, the head of the Sudanese delegation met with the OPCW Director-General, as well as representatives from member states and the Technical Secretariat, to discuss agenda items and ways to enhance cooperation within the framework of the Convention.
