Sudan: A Plan to Close Gum Arabic Smuggling Loopholes

Sudanhorizon – Nazik Shamam
Ahmed El-Tayeb El-Anan, Chairman of the Gum Arabic Exporters Chamber, announced the development of a plan to stimulate Sudanese exports and close the loopholes in smuggling, which has recently expanded to include Egypt and South Sudan. In a statement to the Sudanhorizon news website, he stressed the need to develop reform policies involving all stakeholders in the relevant sector.
Al-Anan explained that the state’s focus on military efforts has made state institutions more tax-oriented than reform-oriented, which requires coordination to find lasting solutions to the problems of the economy and its various sectors.
He pointed out that two meetings were held regarding exports. The first was with the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and the Director General of the National Forestry Corporation with gum arabic exporters. The meetings discussed production and productivity problems and the need for everyone to work together to rebuild the forestry sector, as well as to close the loopholes in smuggling, which expanded during the war to include Egypt and South Sudan.
He noted that the second meeting was with the Minister of Trade and included all representatives of Sudanese exports of sesame, cotton, and gum arabic, with the aim of developing a plan to stimulate Sudanese exports. He revealed that the Minister of Commerce had requested a matrix to be submitted to him, and that he would work on it with the relevant government agencies.
