The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Friday that South Sudan is hosting more than half a million Sudanese refugees across 30 sites in the country, particularly in the refugee camps of Maban, Jamjang, Wedweil, and Gorom.

This number has almost doubled since 2023 due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, highlighting the growing impact of the crisis across the region. More than 810,000 people have fled since April 2023, making this the second-largest group of people escaping the war in Sudan, according to the UNHCR.In a press release issued today, reviewed by the “Sudanhorizon” news website, the UNHCR’s Representative in South Sudan, Marie-Helene Verney, stated that the number of refugees in South Sudan has nearly doubled in less than 18 months. The conflict in Sudan has affected South Sudan more severely than any other country in the region, exacerbating the enormous challenges faced by the nation.

Verney added that the only solution is clear: to end the conflict in Sudan. She emphasized that South Sudan is deeply affected by the crisis and cannot continue to bear so much suffering.

The year 2024 has imposed unprecedented challenges on South Sudan. The ongoing crisis in Sudan has severely disrupted supply routes and oil exports, leading to high inflation and further weakening the economy. Prices of essential goods, including food, have risen significantly, limiting the resources available in host communities and making it extremely difficult to integrate the new arrivals.
