The Governor of the Darfur region, Minni Arko Minnawi, welcomed the UN Security Council’s decision regarding the city of El Fasher and called on the international community to classify the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia as a “terrorist organization.”
In a post on platform X, Minnawi stated, “We welcome the Security Council’s position and its latest statement regarding the situation in El Fasher. However, we urge the Council to implement all its resolutions, particularly Resolution 2736, which calls for ending the siege of El Fasher and five other resolutions related to Darfur.”
He added: “We commend the Security Council’s stance on the militia’s attacks on El Fasher over the past year. We also appreciate the reference to directing countries supporting this group to cease their support.”
Minnawi called on the Council to take more serious steps by declaring this militia a terrorist organisation, explaining: “Its actions, practices, behaviour, and ethics have far exceeded those of ISIS.”
He further emphasised that another crucial step is for the countries supporting this militia and its mercenaries to subject their prominent leaders, who have been involved in planning and supporting terrorist activities, to legal accountability.
