Minerals Ministry Launches Remote Sensing Exploration Project for Gold and Rare Minerals
Sudanhorizon – Hala Hamza
Minister of Minerals Nour Al-Daem Taha on Monday launched a remote sensing exploration project targeting gold and strategic minerals — including lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements — in the Bayuda Desert, affirming that Sudan possesses strong indicators qualifying it to become an active player in the global minerals ecosystem.
Addressing a specialized training course organized by the Training Department of the Geological Research Authority in Port Sudan, the minister expressed pride in the caliber of the trainees and the quality of the scientific content delivered, which focused on strategic and industrial minerals and clean energy minerals.
Taha said: “Sudan began its mining journey with gold, but today the world has shifted toward mining industrial and strategic minerals around which political and economic alliances are now forming.
These minerals have become a priority even ahead of gold,” noting that global attention is currently focused on copper, lithium, and the energy minerals of the future.
He stressed that Sudan is well positioned to be part of this international system, provided that the Geological Research Authority is supported and its human resources are given due attention. He underscored the need to use modern technologies and scientific knowledge in exploration operations, describing the Authority as “the beating heart” of the mining sector, and affirming that sustainable mining cannot be achieved without it and the integration of its complementary arms.
Budget for Surveying and a Training Center
The minister expressed regret over the neglect the Authority had suffered in previous periods despite its long-standing history dating back to 1905. At the same time, he announced the approval of a substantial budget for geological surveying for the current year, formally endorsed, and mandated that all sector entities contribute from their resources to support geological research.
He explained that updating the geological map would bring major benefits to the country, directing the establishment of a training center under the Authority to serve students, graduates, and sector employees, in addition to creating a specialized center for training miners and requiring practitioners in the field to obtain accredited certifications.
Comprehensive Geological Map
For his part, the Director General of the Geological Research Authority, Consultant Geologist Ahmed Haroun Al-Toum, praised the precision of the program’s organization and its objectives, affirming that the project represents a core pillar in implementing the Authority’s strategy and developing national mining.
Al-Toum explained that the Authority is currently working on preparing a comprehensive geological and geochemical map covering all of Sudan, aimed at identifying mineralization sites and exploiting them sustainably to support the national economy — particularly during the reconstruction phase, in which the minerals sector will play a pivotal role in driving development forward.
