Major and Ongoing Qatari Support for Eye Care Services in Sudan

Dr. Mahmoud Al-Badri, Director General of the Khartoum State Ministry of Health and Acting Minister, chaired a meeting at the ministry on Sunday with representatives from Al-Basar International Foundation and Hamad Medical Corporation to discuss ways of strengthening eye care services in Sudan.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Al-Aas Ahmed Kamel, Regional Director of Al-Basar International Foundation; Dr. Omar Mohammed Al-Qahtani, Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Hamad International Hospital in Qatar; Dr. Ismail Abdullah Al-Fadl, Ophthalmology Consultant in Primary Healthcare at Qatar’s Ministry of Health; Dr. Amir Yousif Abu Guroon, Al-Basar Foundation’s representative in Khartoum State; and Professor Mohamed Nour, an ophthalmology specialist.
The meeting announced the implementation of 2,500 free eye surgeries for residents of Khartoum State as part of a Qatari initiative to support Sudan’s healthcare sector. It also unveiled an ambitious plan to perform 100,000 free eye surgeries across Sudan over the next five years.
Dr. Al-Badri expressed his appreciation to Qatar for its continued support to Sudan, particularly during the war. He also praised the significant role played by Al-Basar International Foundation in delivering healthcare services to citizens.
He confirmed that the ministry is moving forward with the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Khartoum Eye Hospital, with plans to reopen it within the coming weeks so it can resume serving patients. He welcomed the initiative to provide 2,500 free surgeries for residents of the state.
For his part, Dr. Al-Aas Ahmed Kamel said the project would represent a significant addition to eye care services in Sudan and emphasized that the initiative is intended to support the health sector and reduce the suffering of patients.
Dr. Omar Al-Qahtani stated that implementation of the initiative would begin in the near future. He explained that the program aims to conduct 100,000 free eye surgeries within five years in partnership with Al-Basar International Foundation, as part of efforts to support the Sudanese people and strengthen specialized ophthalmic healthcare services.
Professor Mohamed Nour welcomed the Qatari initiative and praised its role in expanding eye care services throughout the country. He noted that Makkah Specialized Hospital has already begun conducting free medical campaigns in Wad Madani, helping restore sight to dozens of patients. He expressed hope that such services would reach all those in need across Sudan’s states.
The meeting concluded with agreement on arrangements to hold a donors’ conference in Qatar to support eye care programs and projects in Sudan. Participants said the initiative would contribute to improving services, reducing waiting lists, and increasing access to free treatment for citizens.
