International Civil Defence Body Pledges Full Support to Sudan as Top Priority

Geneva – Sudanhorizon

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem Ahmed, held a meeting on Friday with Arjog Kalantarli, Secretary-General of the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO), as part of the minister’s series of meetings with the heads of international organizations in Geneva.

The meeting explored ways to strengthen cooperation between Sudan and the organization, with particular emphasis on supporting the government’s preparations for the upcoming rainy season and enhancing its capacity to respond to the risks of floods and torrential rains.

The minister briefed the Secretary-General on the measures being undertaken by the Sudanese government to improve emergency preparedness and response during the rainy season, particularly in light of the return of large numbers of citizens to their home areas. He emphasized the urgent need to strengthen civil defense institutions through the provision of rescue and firefighting equipment, water pumps, generators, emergency shelter materials, and disease vector control supplies.

Salem also expressed Sudan’s hope that the organization would assist in mobilizing resources and providing both technical and material support to reinforce the country’s national response efforts.

For his part, the Secretary-General affirmed that supporting Sudan is among the organization’s highest priorities. He pointed to ongoing efforts to mobilize assistance from member states and partners, including arrangements to provide civil defense and firefighting equipment, as well as support for training and capacity-building programs.

The two sides also discussed broader areas of cooperation, including the exchange of expertise, the development of early warning capabilities, and enhanced coordination between the organization and Sudan’s relevant national institutions to strengthen the country’s civil defense system and disaster and emergency response capacity.
