Addis Ababa on Sunday hosted the third edition of the IGAD Media Awards 2025 at the Skylight Hotel. This year’s ceremony was held under the theme: “Storytelling for Climate Action Towards a Safe, Resilient and Stable Region.”

Twenty winners were honoured across 11 media categories, including television, radio, digital journalism, photography, influencers, local languages, and lifetime achievement.

Sudanese journalist Hiba Abdelazim won an award for an investigative report on Nile water pollution, while Faisal Mohamed Salih received the IGAD Lifetime Excellence in Journalism Award.

IGAD Executive Secretary, Workneh Gebeyehu, praised the vital role played by journalists and content creators in defending the African narrative, affirming that media professionals in the region continue to present their stories with “courage and clarity”, free from distortion, in ways that enhance public awareness, deepen understanding and build bridges of communication.

For his part, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos, the guest of honour, stressed that climate change poses an enormous challenge to the Horn of Africa despite the region’s minimal contribution to global emissions.

He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to climate action as part of its national development plans, highlighting initiatives such as the Green Legacy, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), and the Basket of Plenty programme as examples of ongoing national efforts.
