ICRC: The People of El Fasher Cannot be Abandoned

Port Sudan – Geneva – Sudanhorizon
The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Sudan, Daniel O’Malley, has described what is happening in El Fasher as a humanitarian catastrophe. He said in a statement published on Sunday that what people have suffered during these 500 days in El Fasher was nothing short of a catastrophe.
The ICRC head delegate has pointed out that more than 260,000 men, women, and children are trapped, eating one meal a day and risking their lives just to find water, even if it is undrinkable.
He pointed out that local medical teams are being bombarded while trying to work with extremely limited resources, striving to save lives while protecting themselves, adding, they were not just providing treatment, they were performing miracles.
Regarding the situation in Kordofan, the official said that civilians remain in a state of constant displacement and are under pressure and stress due to the volatile and shifting battlefronts. He added, that this was a situation that couldn’t continue.
He added that the people of El Fasher cannot be abandoned. The people of Kordofan cannot be abandoned. The people of Sudan cannot be ignored. “Our call is to stop this now.”
The ICRC official said that international humanitarian law must be respected and observed, a framework that can help concerned bodies to take a step towards this. International humanitarian law must be respected and everything possible must be done to avoid slipping into deeper despair. This step must happen now, he has stressed.
