High-Level Egyptian Delegation Visits Asmara to Strengthen Partnership with Eritrea, Protect Red Sea Security

Egyptian media reported that a high-level Egyptian government delegation visited the Eritrean capital, Asmara, on Saturday as part of “intensive strategic moves aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordinating joint positions on issues in the Horn of Africa.”
The reports added that the visit, which included the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Transport, as well as a number of Egyptian businessmen, comes within the framework of Cairo’s efforts to consolidate its relations with countries in the region and secure vital interests in the Red Sea.
– Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki received the Egyptian delegation to discuss ways to expand economic and political relations.
During the meeting, the Egyptian side affirmed Cairo’s full commitment to supporting Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, with a focus on implementing joint cooperation projects in the fields of mining, transportation, pharmaceuticals, and fisheries.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty clarified that the security of the Red Sea is the exclusive responsibility of the littoral states. He emphasized Egypt’s rejection of any interference by non-littoral parties in arrangements concerning this vital strategic waterway, which is a cornerstone of the national security of the countries bordering it.

The talks highlighted the importance of strengthening logistical connectivity between the two countries through a new maritime transport agreement.
Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir affirmed his country’s readiness to share expertise in the fields of ports and railways and to launch a direct shipping line connecting Egyptian ports with their Eritrean counterparts to enhance trade.
President Afwerki indicated his country’s appreciation for Egyptian efforts aimed at supporting stability in the Horn of Africa region. He added that joint coordination with Egypt in all political, security, and economic fields is a top priority for achieving the mutual interests of the two nations, according to Egyptian media reports.
Observers noted that these steps come at a time when Cairo rejects unilateral actions that threaten the sovereignty of the Horn of Africa countries. Experts confirmed that Egypt is adopting a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting international navigation and preventing any attempts to impose a new reality by external powers that do not have rights in the strategic waterway.
