Geological Research: 75% of Sudanese Resources Await Exploration
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The Director General of the General Authority for Geological Research, Geological Consultant Ahmed Haroun Al-Toumi, revealed that Sudan ranks third in Africa and thirteenth globally in terms of the diversity and volume of its mineral resources. He emphasized that approximately 75% of the country’s mineral resources still require detailed exploration and evaluation.
This came during his meeting Tuesday at his office in Khartoum with a delegation from a Turkish company that expressed interest in investing in Sudan’s mining sector.
Al-Toumi reviewed Sudan’s significant geological potential, particularly in gold, energy minerals, and industrial minerals.
He explained that the General Authority for Geological Research is responsible for research, exploration, evaluation, and promotion of mineral projects. He noted that the government has taken practical steps to simplify investment procedures and offer encouraging incentives, while also providing technical and geological data.
He emphasized that the next phase will focus on strengthening strategic partnerships based on technology transfer and the localization of geological knowledge, thereby maximizing the added value of mineral resources and supporting the national economy.
For their part, officials from the Turkish company and its Sudanese private sector partners explained that their group operates as a holding company with five specialized subsidiaries, including companies working in the mining sector, as well as activities in the energy, petrochemical, textile, and electric vehicle industries. They also have investments in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Syria (east of the Euphrates).
The Turkish delegation affirmed its interest in entering into strategic partnerships in Sudan’s minerals sector, citing what it described as “untapped geological opportunities” that make Sudan one of the most prominent emerging mining markets in the region.
