The Minister for Foreign Minister Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohi El-Din Salem, and Minister of Justice, Abdullah Mohamed Darf, met on Wednesday with the visiting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to discuss ways to coordinate efforts to ensure justice, hold perpetrators accountable, restore rights, and address the grave violations committed by militias against civilians.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the High Commissioner has expressed his appreciation for the Sudanese government’s cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Sudan. He emphasized that his visit aimed to assess efforts to protect human rights following the deplorable violations against civilians in El Fasher and subsequent events in Darfur and Kordofan.
He also expressed the OHCHR’s readiness to continue technical cooperation and capacity building with the Ministry of Justice and national mechanisms in this field.
For his part, the Minister of Justice reviewed the legal and judicial measures being taken by the government regarding the crimes of the terrorist militias, stressing that upholding human rights is a priority in the policies of the “Government of Hope” and a fundamental pillar of the state’s strategy.
He provided an overview of the work of the National Commission to Investigate Violations and the efforts of civilian protection mechanisms aimed at holding perpetrators accountable and securing justice.
For his part, the Minister for Foreign Affairs has described Turk’s visit as a show of solidarity with Sudan following the atrocities committed by the rebels. He commended the High Commissioner’s courage in describing the conflict as a “proxy war for resources,” which helped to dispel the misleading narrative that portrays it as a “war between two generals.”
The Minister affirmed that the government would provide all required assistance to ensure the success of the visit, particularly the High Commissioner’s tour of the displaced persons camps in the Northern State, so that he could witness firsthand the scale of the tragedy and the militia’s brutal and racist behavior towards citizens fleeing their horrific abuses.
