Farmer: The Agricultural Bank Should Allocate Full Funding to Ensure Winter Season Success

Sudanhorizon – Hala Hamza
Wheat producer, Othman Ibrahim, has emphasized the need for allocating full, comprehensive, and indivisible funding for the wheat crop producers if the Government is genuinely interested in a plentiful production.
Commenting on the financing policy indicators for the 2025-2026 winter season announced by the Agricultural Bank, Ibrahim told Sudanhorizon that the producers have clear requirements to receive full funding for the season, including all production inputs, preparation processes, seeds, fertilizers, and even harvesting.
He pointed out that the current situation for the producers does not allow for any partial funding, as the machines, inputs, and all savings have been stolen during the first days of the war, limiting farmers ability to self-finance.
Ibrahim called on the Agricultural Bank to set an incentive price for agriculture in general and wheat in particular, to avoid the risk of insolvency or imprisonment.
He said, “If necessary, producers will be forced to grow alternative crops to wheat, such as sesame, kabakbi, garlic, and beans, given the high prices of wheat production inputs compared to those of alternative crops.”
He called for the implementation of Professor Qanaif’s experiment in integrated financing of the wheat crop through collective preparation of producers. This experiment, implemented in 1992, was a great success, resulting in high wheat productivity, reaching 25 sacks per acre, compared to the current average of only seven sacks.
This productivity was harvested through government mechanisms, and the entire production was purchased from producers without any losses.
The Agricultural Bank revealed its focus, in the financing policy for winter season crops, on financing wheat due to its strategic importance in providing food security for the country.
The bank announced its encouragement of the localization of wheat seeds in an area of 600 thousand acres out of the total area of winter season crops amounting to 850 thousand acres, at a rate of 70% of the area approved for financing for all crops.
The wheat crop represents 50% of the indicative area for wheat in the Ministry of Agriculture’s plan.
