The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on Tuesday the official opening of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam(GERD), which Addis Ababa built on the Blue Nile, according to the official Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).

ENA added that the dam’s in inaugration was attended by a number of African leaders, explaining that the ceremony was attended by Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of Djibouti; Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan; Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of Somalia; William Samoa Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya; Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados; Russell Mmeso Dlamini, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Eswatini; and Ethiopian government officials and leaders from other countries.

The agency stated that Ethiopians were celebrating the opening of the ‘Pride of Africa’, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

The official Ethiopian News Agency published photos and videos of what it said were the official inauguration celebrations of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. The agency added in its report: “Unlike many major African projects that rely on external debt, the Renaissance Dam was financed almost entirely by the Ethiopian people.”

The Ethiopian Prime Minister had previously described GERD as “evidence of Ethiopia’s strength when united,” stressing that it was not just a national project, but a historic achievement for all of Africa, according to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).

He said, “The GERD was born from the hearts of millions, financed by our people, and built with their sacrifices. It is a living testament to our shared vision, unwavering will, and collective action.”

PM, Abiy, had invited Egypt and Sudan to attend the official inauguration ceremony of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), but neither Egypt nor Sudan responded to the invitation, as the two countries reject what they describe as Ethiopia’s “unilateral actions” regarding the operation and filling of the GERD.

It is worth noting that US President Donald Trump recently stated that his country “funded the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam,” but it remains unclear how this was achieved.
