Sudanese Prime Minister Dr. Kamal Idris and his Egyptian counterpart held an official round of talks on Thursday, marking the beginning of Dr. Idris’s visit to Cairo. The discussions focused on frameworks and initiatives for joint cooperation between the two brotherly nations in the upcoming phase.
Ministers from both sides also held bilateral meetings to explore detailed proposals and cooperation programs between corresponding ministries.
According to the joint statement issued at the conclusion of the talks, the Egyptian side reiterated its full support for the Sudanese government and all efforts aimed at preserving its national institutions. Egypt also reaffirmed its rejection of any threat to Sudan’s unity or territorial integrity and expressed its unwavering support for the Sudanese people’s aspirations toward progress, prosperity, reconstruction, and development.
The Sudanese side, in turn, expressed appreciation for the deep-rooted bonds and commonalities between the two peoples and reiterated the Sudanese state’s commitment — through its various national institutions — to working jointly with Egypt to strengthen and expand bilateral ties.
Both parties emphasized the importance of convening joint committees, with relevant authorities in both countries tasked with determining appropriate timelines. The discussions also touched on enhancing cooperation in investment and the opportunities available for Egyptian companies to invest in strategically significant sectors in Sudan, especially as the country prepares for a reconstruction phase.
The two sides commended the significant progress in sectoral coordination, especially in transportation. They praised the measures taken on railway and electricity connectivity projects between the two countries, noting their potential to open up broader prospects for economic and trade cooperation.
Talks also addressed collaboration in the health sector, with both parties agreeing to boost cooperation in higher education, scientific research, and technology. They also agreed to launch specialized training programs for Sudanese professional and technical development in cooperation with relevant Egyptian agencies. Additional agreements were made to activate frameworks for cooperation in human development and administrative reform.
The discussions extended to regional security issues and means of enhancing and sustaining it. Both countries stressed the need for continued coordination and consultation on regional security matters, particularly in the Red Sea region.
Moreover, the two sides reaffirmed their rejection of Ethiopia’s unilateral approach on the Blue Nile, which they stated runs counter to principles of international law and the spirit of cooperation that should govern the use of the Nile River — a lifeline for all basin countries. They confirmed continued coordination through the Permanent Joint Technical Commission for Nile Waters, the official body responsible for developing and articulating a unified position for both nations.
