Australian Senator Calls for Sanctions on UAE Over Support for Genocide in Sudan

Canberra – Sudanhorizon
Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe has expressed her full solidarity with the Sudanese people in their struggle against the ongoing genocide in the Darfur region, urging the ruling Australian Labour government to sever trade ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and impose strict sanctions on it for supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), accused of committing atrocities in Sudan.
Speaking before the Australian Parliament today, Senator Thorpe stated:
“As with most genocides, the West is not merely complicit — it is an active driver of the conflict. Sudan is burning, and the blood stains the earth so vividly it can be seen from space. Hundreds of mothers were killed inside a maternity hospital, and thousands of civilians were murdered and forcibly displaced as the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces overran the city of El Fasher last week.”
She continued:
“Once again, our so-called leaders have failed to protect an entire generation, allowing the UAE to fuel a new genocide to seize Darfur’s vast gold resources.”
Thorpe highlighted that Sudanese activists have repeatedly warned the international community to take urgent action. Still, Western powers have prioritised their relations with the UAE and its grip on Sudan’s resources over the lives of Darfur’s people.
The senator accused the UAE of smuggling Western-manufactured weapons into Sudan — the same arms used in the genocide — and condemned the Australian government for continuing to strengthen its trade relations with Abu Dhabi despite these crimes.
She called for immediate measures, including cutting trade relations and imposing sanctions on the UAE, opening emergency humanitarian corridors for Sudanese refugees, and providing greater support for the Sudanese community in Australia.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese community in Victoria held a large solidarity rally in central Melbourne on Tuesday under the slogan “Sudan is Bleeding – El Fasher Calls You”, denouncing the horrific massacres and atrocities committed by the RSF terrorist militia against civilians in El Fasher and across Darfur.
A large number of Sudanese expatriates, Australian supporters of human rights causes, and civil society organisations participated in the rally. Demonstrators waved Sudanese flags and banners calling for an end to the genocide and accountability for the perpetrators, chanting slogans urging the international community to act swiftly to protect civilians.
Speakers at the rally expressed their full solidarity with the Sudanese people in their struggle against genocide. They called on the Australian government and the international community to condemn the ongoing crimes, sanction those supporting the militia, and increase humanitarian aid for those affected.
