Sudanhorizon – Exclusive – Mariam
Information obtained by the “Sudanhorizon” news website has revealed that the temporary five-member presidential committee formed by the African Peace and Security Council to address the Sudanese crisis during its virtual summit on June 21 has called for a meeting this October in Kampala, led by its chairperson, Yoweri Museveni.
The committee, a symbol of African unity, includes a president from each of the five African regions: the Ugandan president leads the committee as well as the East African region, the Nigerian president represents West Africa, the Egyptian president represents North Africa, the Angolan president represents Southern Africa, and the Equatorial Guinean president represents Central Africa.
According to the information obtained by “Sudanhorizon” the member states of the temporary five-member presidential committee are also members of the African Peace and Security Council.
Sources speaking to “Sudanhorizon” expect that the convening of the five-member summit in Kampala could lead to a breakthrough in resolving the crisis in Sudan. This is in addition to the outcomes of the visit made by members of the Peace and Security Council to Port Sudan last Thursday.
In this context, Sudanese government sources described the African Peace and Security Council’s visit to Sudan as successful and confirmed that the visit would have significant follow-up implications for Sudan’s return to the African Union and exploration of ways to end the war.
Peace and Security Council members met with the head of the transitional Sovereignty Council and Council member Major General Ibrahim Jaber. They also met with the governor of the Darfur region, Mini Arko Minawi, and the Attorney General of the Republic of Sudan. Additionally, they held discussions with “stakeholders” from civil society organisations and political forces.
The Peace and Security Council issued a unified statement regarding the field visit to both Cairo and Port Sudan, emphasizing the urgent and critical need for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan and engaging in negotiations that would alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
The statement also referred to the meetings held by Council members with the head of the Sovereignty Council and several officials and stakeholders.
