Ambassador Khidr Haroun Expresses Outrage Over UN’s Silence Regarding Those Responsible for Sudanese Tragedy

New York – Sudanhorizon

Khidr Haroun, Sudan’s former ambassador to the United States, expressed his outrage over the United Nations’ stance on the foreign parties responsible for igniting and prolonging the war in Sudan.
In an open letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Khidr called on the international organization to fulfil its role and address Sudan’s complaint against the United Arab Emirates for supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in the war that broke out in Sudan in mid-April of last year.
Ambassador Khidr recalled Guterres’ response to the Syrian refugee crisis when he was the Assistant Secretary-General to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He quoted Guterres’ remarks about the suffering of Syrian refugees, highlighting his deep compassion for the victims and the tragic hunger affecting their children when he was heading the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Khidr expressed confidence that Guterres had seen and still witnessed the suffering of Sudanese people who had been displaced from their homes and country, including young girls being raped in front of their families, some killed, and others sold into slavery.
Khidr added: “Major media outlets in the U.S., as well as the U.S. Congress and even reports from the United Nations itself, have confirmed that the UAE is the source of the suicide drones and ammunition killing Sudanese civilians. The UAE has also been identified as the source of mercenaries brought from as far as Colombia and at least nine African countries, enabling the infamous Janjaweed militia to continue its genocidal actions against the Sudanese people.”
The ambassador questioned, “Yet your esteemed organization has failed to even consider Sudan’s complaint for eight months! Should we not ask why? Does this not violate the provisions of the UN Charter? Don’t you think that our children and grandchildren, those who survive, will realize that the UN had betrayed them when it wrongly—perhaps deliberately—labelled the massacre they are enduring as merely a ‘conflict between two generals’ over power? This classification has allowed the militia to continue killing our people and given the Security Council an excuse to fail in fulfilling its duty to stop the brutal aggression against a member state of the organization.”
He concluded: “Your Excellency, famines and malnutrition among children are but the consequences of unjust wars that the United Nations has so far failed to stop.”
