Al-Tijani Sisi to Sudanhorizon: The Quartet Wil Risk More Fragmentation, Not Solutions

Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Musa
The head of the Sudanese National Movement Forces, Dr. Al-Tijani Sisi, stressed that any external effort to resolve the Sudanese crisis without involving all stakeholders and without taking into account that the solution must not transcend sovereignty and national decision-making will only lead to further complications.
In a statement to the Sudanhorizon news website, Sisi said, “I do not expect the Quartet (the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates) to come up with an initiative that will lead to a solution in the country’s interest.”
He added that the intervention of the previous Quartet and Trio played a major role in the outcome of the situation in Sudan. He continued, “The new Quartet is following in the footsteps of the previous Quartet, which was one of the factors that led to the collapse of the transitional period and the failure of the transition to democratic civilian rule.
Therefore, I do not expect it to provide a just solution to the country’s crisis.” He expected the new Quartet to come up with an initiative that would lead to further fragmentation and polarization, and lead to an escalation of confrontations in the country.
He stressed that the solution lies in Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue that excludes no one. He said, “We fear that the American administration will come up with quick solutions, as it did between India, Pakistan, Iran, and Israel.” He emphasized that the Sudanese reality is very different, adding, “We fear that America will pressure to implement a solution outside of Sudanese interests, and we realize that Egypt will not allow this. Our consolation is the presence of Egypt and Saudi Arabia in this initiative.”
Media sources confirmed that the foreign ministers’ meeting of the Saudi, US, Egyptian, and Emirati Quartet on Sudan has been postponed to July 29 in Washington. The sources noted that the US State Department has yet to formulate a vision for the Washington meeting on Sudan or a strategy for resolving the crisis.
