On Monday, the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, received the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, at his office in Port Sudan, accompanied by a high-level Arab League delegation. The meeting was attended by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ali Yusuf, the Sudanese Ambassador to Egypt, and Sudan’s Representative to the Arab League, General Imaduddin Adawi.

In a press statement, the Arab League Secretary-General described his meeting with the Sovereign Council President as very positive, during which the Arab League’s support for Sudan and its people was clearly conveyed. He added, “We all hope for an immediate cessation of the fighting in Sudan, the rebuilding of the country, and the return of displaced persons and refugees to their areas.”

He explained that he had listened to the humanitarian aspects of the issue, which he described as extremely difficult. The discussion focused on how the Arab League could help, in coordination with the international community and the African Union, to bring peace and stability back to Sudan. Aboul Gheit emphasized that the activities undertaken by the Arab League, the United Nations, the African Union, and other influential parties aim to stabilize the situation and assist Sudan in emerging from this crisis.

Aboul Gheit added that his visit to Sudan would highlight the magnitude of the problem and the need for more effort and action to halt the fighting, restore peace and stability, and allow Sudanese citizens the opportunity to secure their lives and bring stability back to their country.

For his part, Sudan’s Ambassador to Egypt, General Imaduddin Adawi, stated that the Arab League has always stood by Sudan, supporting its just causes and national institutions. He highlighted the League’s position toward Sudan as a security shield, emphasising the need to refrain from interference in Sudan’s internal affairs.

Adawi pointed out the League’s commendable actions in organising workshops to support the reconstruction of Sudan’s industrial and agricultural sectors. He expressed his gratitude to the Arab League Secretary-General for his visit at this critical time. He also mentioned the other meetings held with Sovereign Council Member Major General Ibrahim Jaber and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Culture, and Information, which focused mainly on the violations committed by the militia of the Al-Daqlo family against civilians, targeting state institutions and infrastructure. He also noted the support these militias receive from some neighbouring and regional countries, affirming that the attacks on Sudan pose a threat to both Sudan’s security and the security of the neighbouring Red Sea and Horn of Africa regions.
