Abdullah Yahya Ahmed Hussein, leader of the Sudan Liberation Forces Alliance (SLFA), was sworn in as a member of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council on Tuesday before the council’s president, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. The ceremony was attended by the Secretary-General of the Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Ghali Ali Youssef, and the Head of the Judiciary in the Red Sea State, who represented the Chief Justice, according to a statement from the Transitional Sovereignty Council.
After taking the oath, the new Sovereignty Council member, Abdullah Yahya, expressed his gratitude to the Armed Forces, the joint forces, the popular resistance, and mobilised groups for their resilience and defence of Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during the “Battle of Dignity.”
Yahya thanked the President of the Sovereignty Council for the trust placed in him, stating that he would work with his colleagues on the council to provide the best services for the citizens and safeguard their interests. He emphasised that the priority in the coming phase would be establishing security and stability and facilitating the return of displaced persons and refugees to their villages and regions.
On 13 May, the Sudan Liberation Forces Alliance—Revolutionary Liberation Council announced the dismissal of former Sovereignty Council member Al-Taher Abu Bakr Hajar from the alliance’s leadership and tasked Abdullah Yahya, the deputy leader and Minister of Urban Development, with taking over his duties.
The Sudan Liberation Forces Alliance was formed from the unification of three movements: the Sudan Liberation Movement – Unity Leadership, led by Abdullah Yahya; the Sudan Liberation Movement for Justice, led by Al-Taher Abu Bakr Hajar; and the Justice and Equality Movement, led by Abdullah Bashar Jali.
On 6 August, al-Burhan issued a decree appointing Abdullah Yahya as a member of the Sovereignty Council, following his decision in November to dismiss Al-Taher Abu Bakr Hajar from the council.
